Research Update

The UTCOM Chattanooga Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is very active in a range of scholarly activities.  The majority of the faculty and residents in our program serve as investigators in clinical research conducted at Erlanger Health System.  In the past decade, our faculty, fellows, and residents have published over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters.  Much of this research has appeared in leading journals in the field of orthopaedic surgery, including Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma, Foot & Ankle International, Journal of Hand Surgery, Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, and Journal of Arthroplasty.  More than 75% of our faculty members have published research on behalf of the University of Tennessee.  Additionally, our residents’ original research studies have been presented on the podium at national meetings, with numerous residents traveling to present research at regional and state orthopaedic conferences.  Through the years, our residents have competed proudly amongst their peers during UTCOM’s Annual Resident Research Week, receiving countless awards for departmental research endeavors.  Upon graduation, several orthopaedic surgery residents will have co-authored more than one peer-reviewed publication—a valuable research experience they carry with them into fellowship training and in practice!
